Aeolian Islands Archipelago

Lipari is the largest island in the archipelago. Human presence in the archipelago dates back to a very ancient period. Prehistoric peoples were certainly attracted by the presence of large quantities of obsidian, a glassy substance of volcanic origin, thanks to which the Aeolian Islands were at the center of flourishing trade routes.

Panarea is the smallest and lowest island in the Aeolian archipelago, as well as the oldest. It is a micro-archipelago located between Lipari and the island of Stromboli, on a unique submarine base.

Alicudi is the westernmost of the Aeolian archipelago. It is located about 34 nautical miles (almost 63 km) west of Lipari. The island’s beaches are stony and rocky. Winter storms cause them to move back and forth, sometimes leaving some areas of black sand.

Filicudi is the fifth largest island in the Aeolian archipelago. The second westernmost island in the archipelago, after Alicudi. Located about 24 nautical miles west of Lipari and dominated by Mt. Fossa Felci, an extinct volcano 773 mt above sea level.

Stromboli reaches 926 meters above sea level and is 2000 meters deep, has persistent explosive activity and is one of the most active volcanoes in the world.

Strombolicchio, a vestige of an ancient volcanic chimney, is located a few hundred meters northeast of the island of Stromboli. The islet houses an automated, solar-powered marine lighthouse.

Vulcano. Mythology says that on this island existed the forges of Hephaestus, a fire god and blacksmith who had the Cyclops as his helpers.

Salina is the most fertile and water-rich island. Precious grapes are grown from which Malvasia di Lipari, a sweet-tasting wine, and capers exported all over the world.
